Hardworking Heptathletes Raise $25,000 for 826 Boston

Heptathlon referee Lyette demonstrates the proper way to balance a book.

We did it! After six grueling weeks of throwing pencils, answering obtuse trivia, alliterative ping pong and the like, our amazing heptathletes have finally completed the first ever Literary Heptathlon!

Due to the stellar efforts of our heptathletes — star volunteers, staff and interns all — we were able to flex our collective fundraising muscles, smashing through our $18,000 goal and ultimately raising more than $25,000 for 826 Boston's free literacy programs!

The Final Games was a true triumph, with volunteers and staff, past and present, scrambling to compete in a whiplash series of challenging events, including a book balance relay, mini-dictionary cornhole, human bananagrams, alliterative ping-pong, and Infinite Jest shuffleboard.
Heptathletes Hermiode and Isata relish their 1st place victory.

Congrats to 826 super intern Isata and friend Hermiode for wining the Final Games, and to Boston Chile Donut Grenades for being the top volunteer team — taking away the gold for the overall Heptahtlon!

826 Boston Grant Manager Jenna Leschuk shares a laugh with City Councilor O'Malley.

The event also featured inspiring words from City Councilor Matt O'Malley and a rousing performance from local blues rockers The Reluctants (featuring 826 Boston's own Jess Drench).

Special thanks to our volunteers referees for their diligent scorekeeping and making sure heptathletes played by the rules.
826 Boston staff JJ and JoJo compete as referee Alijah supervises.

And thank you to our munificent sponsors for providing food, drinks and prizes for all the games!

Lastly, a heartfelt thanks to all the heptathletes and their most generous donors for all their efforts these past six weeks. Now is the time to rest, recuperate, and prepare for next year's games!

Race to the Finish: Final Games & Week 6 Rankings

The finish line is in sight!

Tomorrow marks the official end of the Literary Heptathlon fundraiser. As of this writing, our heptathletes have raised $16,432 towards our $18,000 goal. We're so close — let's finish strong!

Remember: the first and second heptathletes to garner 8 donations between April 3 and tomorrow will receive two Coolidge Corner Theatre movie passes and a Wellesely Books giftcard, respectively.

Here's a couple non-fundraising ways to earn points before tomorrow's big event:

  • Invite your friend to register for an upcoming volunteer orientation session — earn 1,000 points per friend.
  • Sign up for any volunteer opportunity between April 25 and the end of June — earn 500 points per session.
Please contact Chris or call 826 Boston at 617.442.5400 to make sure your points are counted.

The Final Games

Thursday, 4/14, 7-9pm @ Hibernian Hall, Dudley Square

Both the culmination of the competition and a celebration of the fundraisers success, tomorrow's final games of the Literary Heptathlon will be one for the ages. Like an adult field day with a literary twist, the event will feature a series of unusual, academic and athletic games, along with free refreshments, and music from The Reluctants (featuring 826 Boston's own Jess Drench). Points will be alottted to teams who win each game, contributing to individuals' and teams' overall point scores.

At the event, trophies and prizes (including certificates to The Gallows Restaurant, Yoga Healthworks, Brattle Theatre and more) will be distributed on the following basis:

  • 1st & 2nd place —volunteer teams
  • 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place — individual point earners (volunteers)
  • 1st place — staff team overall point scores, volunteer team
  • 1st place — Final Games team

The event and games are welcome to all. Admission is free for heptathletes and donors, $10 suggested donation for all others. See you there!
