Quizzical Minds Win Big: Lit. Jeopardy Recap & Week 3 Rankings

Heptathlete team Boston Chile Donut Grenades savor their 1st place victory.
  • Which punctuation mark means 'together' in classical Greek?
  • Which Victorian villain was called the 'Napoleon of Crime?'
  • Who did Hamlet call 'a fellow of infinite jest?'

Think you know the answer to these puzzling questions? Then you would have done well in our Literary Jeopardy trivia night last Thursday at Porter Square Books! Over 50 aficionados of belle-lettres competed for points, prizes and, most importantly, pride in this contest of wordy erudition. Thanks to our lovely host Meredith Goldstein of the Boston Globe, Porter Square Books and all our generous sponsors for a great time. A special congratulations to team Boston Chile Donut Grenades (pictured) for achieving first place in round 1, and 2nd place for round two. They earned a total of 3,600 points for their agile minds and accurate answers.

As of this writing, the Literary Heptathletes have raised $13,141 towards our $18,000 goal! That means we're almost 75% of the way home! Now let's raise some more — on the double!

Double Your Donation, Double Your Impact

Thanks to the generosity of Adventures in Learning Foundation, all donations collected from now until April 8th will be MATCHED with an equal donation. That means a gift of $5 automatically becomes $10. But remember, this opportunity has an expiration date of 4/8. With a little over two weeks left in the fundraiser, NOW is the time to push that forgetful friend or absentee aunt to pitch in their donation to the cause. So get asking! Find sample appeal language here.

Party at the Finish Line

Now all eyes turn to the Championship Games, coming up on Thursday, April 14th, 7pm at Hibernian Hall in Dudley Square. All are welcome to this celebratory evening of free food & drinks, live music, exciting prizes and many (serious yet silly) competitive games, so invite your friends and family!

Pick Up Your Pencils: Week 1 Rankings

Giant pencils, alliterative shouting matches, snarky bingo — it's been an exciting first full week for the Literary Heptathlon.

Thanks to the amazing fundraising of our Heptathletes, we've already raised more than $5,800 — that's more than 32% towards our $18,000 goal! That's a whole lot of pencils and paper, folks.

A hearty high five— and 100 points! — to everyone who came out to celebrate the kickoff at the 826 Boston center last Wednesday. Pencils were thrown, ping-pong played, and songs sung. A big thanks to our sponsors Artifact Cider, La Rana Rossa Pizzeria, Ula Cafe, Roxy Grilled Cheese, Sam Adams and City Feed & Supply for their donations of food, drink and prizes.

Don't miss out on our next LH game, Literary Jeopardy trivia night, Thursday March 24th, 7pm at Porter Square Books. Register yourself and tell your smarty-pants friends! Free for all Heptathletes, $10 for everyone else. Earn 200 points by attending, with a chance to win up to 500 points if you win! Plus, more gift cards from Flour Bakery, tickets to the Brattle Theatre, and more! RSVP today!

Can't wait to earn more points? Apart from fundraising, you can earn points by adding to the story at Writesomething.org! What will Herald, the abominable — and adorable — snowkitten do next? Write your part and watch the points roll in. Plus, watch the Writesomething facebook page for weekly writing competitions. Learn more about how to earn points with Writesomething here.
